Interview with Eve Walton-Healey - Founder of Ricepaper the Label
Tell us about your brand and what you do.
Ricepaper was named after a reflection of our values and ethics of being a transparent fashion label. Simple, Elegant and Ethical -We believe in creating pieces that are timeless, versatile and enduring. We believe in mindful consumption and minimising waste through creating long lasting pieces.
When and how did you start?
We launched Ricepaper in 2017 first making our pieces in Bali, Indonesia. We made three collections with our Bali factory before moving manufacturing to Melbourne where we have currently now made three collections and fourth/ fifth in the making .
What has challenged you the most since starting your business?
Ahhh, its such a learning curve! Before starting the label I had been working in the fashion industry for three years and nothing could have prepared me for what I have learnt through having Ricepaper. I think there are day to day challenges, monthly challenges and yearly challenges with a small business. The most challenging concept or part of having the business is just always being on the go! I never stop thinking haha.
Where are your products made?
Meet the makers: Can you tell us about the people who make your products?
Yes we currently have two makers in Melbourne. Vanessa Gullone - whom is based in Heidelberg Heights with her small team of workers. Vanessa does all our woven pattern making, sampling and production. I work very closely with her developing my designs and concepts throughout each season which she has now been apart of for over 18 months.
Emma Bovill - Emma is based in Brunswick, I started working with Emma late last year on our current seasons knit pieces which she pattern made and did the production for and is working on some new pieces for us for later this year.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I am always really drawn to simple, versatile shapes that women can wear to a number of occasions so this really impacts my designs, then I would say I am a fabrics person so to develop the styles more I really need to sit down with fabric options and put the styles together with fabrics in mind.
What is your main ethical and sustainable agenda?
Ethical Manufacturing, Small production runs- minimising waste and sourcing sustainable fibres
Which of the following Values do you align with? *
Fair (Human rights)
Locally Made (In Australia)
Sustainable (natural, organic fabrics etc)
Up-cycled (dead stock fabric)
Vegan (Animal cruelty free / no animal product
