“Each metre of fabric has a history and identity; each imperfection is unique”
Woven with love and care by expert artisans, on traditional handlooms in Northeast India and Myanmar, The Fabric Social craft beautiful handloom silks and cottons through traditional practices that make textiles a passion rather than just a product.
The Fabric Social was launched in 2014 by Katie, Sharna and Fi – three young Australian women who met while living in New Delhi, India. Inspired by the work of gender rights and disarmament activist Binalakshmi Nepram, the trio spent time volunteering in India’s Northeast and developed a deep understanding of the issues conflict-affected women there face.
With a shared background in humanitarian law and advocacy, the Co-Founders decided to start The Fabric Social as a way to secure better living standards for women and keep their weaving traditions alive in the process. Unlike many brands The Fabric Social do not have “employees” and instead partner directly with women who help other women weavers access fair working conditions that are environmentally friendly and free from slave labour.
