This week we welcomed sustainable hosiery brand The Legwear Co to the eco.mono family. A brand empowering humanity to reconsider fast fashion.
Most hosiery products on the market are poorly manufactured and ladder or tear after just a few wears, this has a huge impact on the environment. The Legwear Co pieces are designed to last and actually come with a 60 day warranty which is a world first in the industry.
The Legwear Co plan is to recover as much waste hosiery from households around the UK as possible. They are continuing to explore how they can use this waste to create our their very own yarn that can be made back into hosiery. Creating a completely sustainable & vertical manufacturing process.
Every year an estimated 250,000 tons of hosiery waste goes into landfill around the world. Before now textile products that contain elastane or lycra have not been able to be recycled. However, The Legwear Co have found a way of removing the elastane content from the yarn at a different melting point to the polyamide. Removing the elastane content means they can then recycle the PA6 into other plastic end uses.
So, we asked Daniel Clayton Founder of The Legwear go to tell us a little more about his new venture:
The Legwear Co.
Tell us about your brand and what you do.
We are a fashion for good/social enterprise brand from the UK. We offer a range of sustainable legwear pieces, specialising is hosiery tights and shapewear leggings. We also run a free recycling program to save hosiery from landfill around the world. This can be any brand not just TLC branded products.
When and how did you start?
What has challenged you the most since starting your business?
Starting a brand from scratch without a 6 figure marketing budget is hard in any industry. The thing I find the hardest at this early stage is brand awareness.
Where are your products made?
We manufacture at a family run hosiery manufacturer in Brescia Italy.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw product inspiration from all the females close to me. I have spent 6 year fine tuning the product make up and structure of our legwear pieces. I draw brand inspiration from every social enterprise entrepreneur around the world who are stopping at nothing to change the industry they are immersed in.
What is your main ethical and sustainable agenda?
To become a climate positive fashion brand where we recycle more than we sell.
Which of the following Values do you align with? *
Fair (Human rights)
Sustainable (natural, organic fabrics etc)
Vegan (Animal cruelty free / no animal products)
Quick Fire Round!
If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
Dolphin for sure! Swimming and riding waves freely without a care in the world. Other than all of the ocean plastic of course.
What is one of your weird quirks?
OCD for sure. I only have even numbers on volumes and things like that.
What is your favourite movie quote?
Ace Ventura: If I'm not back in 5 minutes, just wait longer.
You can invite 4 people to a dinner party, dead or alive who would you invite?
Shane Warne, Tiger Woods, Mohamed Ali & my late Grandad Bill.
If you where a super hero what would your powers be?
I'd be able to teleport anywhere around the world in a flash. So I could see my family in the UK whenever I wanted.
Rocketman - Elton John
Favourite book growing up
Wasn't much of a reader but i loved the Disney movies and books.
