Happy New Year, it's finally 2016 and after weeks of saying "In the new year i'll..." it's actually time to do it. I don't particularly believe in the 'New Year, New Me!' philosophy, I think it suggests that you were broke and needed fixing. You're not broke, maybe you just need a different mindset,to reevaluate, set some new goals. What's good, what's not? Don't forget you have some great bits too. I certainly needed to do all of the above, in September 2015 I quit my full time job to start my own business and do casual contract positions to fund it.
Since then, I have been coasting. I could see where I wanted to be but I had no set plan of how I was going to get there. Also in the back of my mind I was thinking, Will I end up naked, homeless, starving, and trapped in a pit of scorpions if I start this business?? (Jasondoesstuff.com)
reality check, ecomono is not a business (yet!), it's a sustainable fashion blog.
Once I realised this, I could start setting my goals for 2016. Where will I be in December 2016 and how am I going to get there?. As an extremely visual person I decided to put together a mood board, almost a huge brain dump that involved snipping and sticking cut outs from Pinterest onto a large piece of white cardboard - wa-lah! there I have it 2016.
It's very black, white, grey and green which is EXACTLY what I wanted. Now I have a vision, this will hang on the wall next to my desk each day. Then, when I feel like I am going off track all I need to do is look up at this board. No doubt things will certainly change over the next 12 months, but that't the joy of it right? Small steps.
5 Tips for getting focused for 2016:
It's the 21st century, we're lucky, we pretty much have access to everything just by the click of a few buttons on a keyboard. This also means we are in a constant battle with endless distractions, and most of the time we're the ones taking all the punches, not giving them. Here are a few simple tips for getting and staying focused this year:
Obviously, clarify your goals and keep them in mind.
If this blog has taught you anything, I hope it is to figure out what your goals are. If you still don't know maybe think about it in a different way, ask yourself why do I need to focus? I need to finish this essay, I need to pay the bills, I want to be successful. Set yourself little reminders, whether it's a visual mood board like mine, a note on a post it, an inspirational quote framed on the wall OR (and I like this one) changing your passwords to be little reminders Login: ecomono Password: onebilliondollars (JOKE! Get unplugged, simple. Turn off your notifications for social media, set times of the day to check emails and take back the control. That cat video your friend just sent you can wait, seriously.
relax, calm the mind.
As well as technology there is also another HUGE distraction, your own thoughts. You know what I'm talking about, we have all lay in bed thinking just. go. to. sleep.
Well this happens during the day too, we jump from one thought to another. I reccomend meditation, sit there and do nothing but focus your mind.
be healthy and exercise.
You knew it was coming right? Is it common sense? Maybe not. Everything you do, eat or drink has an impact on the way your body and mind perform. Get into a routine with your diet and exercise and track your attention span over the next few weeks.
